As someone who has never used oils.... i have a question.

Can i do a background in an acrylic wash or even just straight out acrylic on sponges....

....then use oils on top of the acrylic for the actual design.

I think i can....but not certain... I know it cant be done the other way around.

Im using a pre-sealed canvas board which is suitable for both acrylic and oil.

Thanks....

Edited to add.....also what is the approx drying time for oil....in general?

yeah oil can go over acrylic. Alot of people use acrylic wash for their first layer when doing oil paintings.

ooh drying time for oil. With Liquin it is usually touch dry the next day. Without liquin, in humidity....well lets just say I still have one drying from MONTHS ago lol

Hi Lily
As long as you are painting on an acrylic primed ground and not oil primed then it will be totally fine.
I usually use acrylics for my underpainting and have never had a problem.

Helm....omg...months? I think I'll use Liquin.

Which brings me to my next question about Liquin..lol

Is Liquin something i mix into my oils...or is it applied after im done like a sealing coat?

Redsy....yes...the canvas board i bought says "primed for acrylic & oils"........ty :)

Lily, Liquin is mixed in. I think it was Bob that recommended 15%? I can't remember...

Yeah I think that was a freak painting Lily, others without Liquin have dried quicker ;)

Liquin will make you paint dry alot quicker. You mix it into your paint just like other mediums. You can mix it with o/s to make it leaner..
If you add more then about 15% it will start to make your paint transparent. It is designed to be a quick drying 'glaze' medium.
Alot people use liquin for their only medium and it works well. :)

hehe Lily... you made me giggle.

I think it all depends how thickly you put the oil paint on, if you paint thinly like me it will be a week max.

Helm...Redsy...Lauren....thank u.

I think im all good now. 15% Liquin mixed into the oil is what i'll do. My acrylic work can be quite thick...so i'll probably have a similar technique with oil....(and im impatient)....so I'll use a drying medium......
