View Full Version : New to all this
Hey everyone, I thought i'd put some of my work up for some feedback. I mainly draw portraits, but i have tried painting with oils a bit. My main medium is charcoal at the moment. Its great for depth of shadow.
These are two of my sketches
- JFK and RFK
- Cutler Beckett
I would love to hear any kind of feedback...
Thanks,
Dani

Hi Dani. Nice work! I'm a fan of charcoals.
Hi DAni, nice! I like the first one best. For the second one, have you tried smudging? Might make some nice variations in tone? I'm really quite terrible at charcoal though, I do like seeing peoples work in this medium

Dani - these a lovely, and the raw and clean cut use of charcole give the works a 60's feel. Well Done !!
Thanks for the feedback....I have used smudging the charcoal in a couple of my other sketches, and it does give an entirely different feel to the person. They come out younger in a way because the face seems smoother. I do like testing that though....
I like what you said V-Mak about the raw and clean cut of the charcoal and how it comes across. I must admit that i love the 50's and 60's and it's part of the reason why i tend to do alot of black and white. I adore the old movie posters from the 50's and how they were life-like and cartoonish in the look of people.....so classy!...

Love the mood of the 'JFK & RFK' piece!! I too am a big fan of the 50 & 60's,...and the 20's,30's and 40's!!! Love everything to do with movies, design, dress, mannerism, anything to do with those times!!

These are both great, I love the first one as well, the only drawing I have ever done in charcoal was 40 years ago of Sean Connery, my sister has still got it, will have to have another go one day , if it turned out half as good as yours I would be happy, WELL DONE

Dani, well done, maybe a few lost edges would soften the portrait a bit. I was doing a piece today in charcoal, smudging areas and taking off charcoal with a kneedable eraser.
Like the first one best. Do you ever use a white stick of pastel with charcoal ?
Actually Judy, i have never tried that with charcoal before..i must try it...sounds promising. I have done quite a bit of work with pastels before and I really likes the texture and blend it gives for portraits, so..yeah i may have to mix and give it go...thanks mate!
It makes for a greater variance of tone & blending the two together .... well I'll let you find out for yourself ! lol
I'm sure you will enjoy the experience& I look forward to seeing the results.

I especially like the first one. I like the great black and white contrast you have created. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
okie dokie...i'll put up something recent...i did one at the start of the month where i used some smudging...lol...he came out way too young...I'll try get it up for you to see ASAP...thanks for your interest also guys...it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to know people want to see my work.... : )
This is one where I used smudging instead of a raw look that I used in the others.
