I was wondering if anyone could recommend to me a good acid-free paper? I see people use Bristol board alot but I think that is American as I can't see it anywhere here in Australia. I like to use a fine paper for both my pen and pencil work but to buy a heavy paper with high gsm it is usually a rough paper....argh I don't know what to do.

Here's the list from the art shop
http://theartshop.com.au/category129_1.htm but its hard to know what is what and the best thing the art shops around here carry is AS oil paint, the rest is all 2nd quality stuff in both paint and paper

Do you mean you like a smooth surface ? There are many to choose from ... Hot pressed watercolour paper has a very smooth surface but can bleed with some inks. Acid free card [ one of my preferences for pen & ink] or foam-core-board from art suppliers. Even acid free mount board can be used. Am interested to hear what you find to be suitable.

Yep I like the smooth surface most.
oh I saw foam board on the art shop list, but wasn't sure what it was. that acid free card sounds good, I just don't have access to a good art shop so I was trying to order it online at the artshop but they don't really describe the product. I shall do some more investigating - thanks for the info Judy, I might try a foam board (so I have something to work with until I get a thumb on this ;)

Wonder why no one else has replied ? I was interested to see what others use that may be better than my suggestions. It's such a personal thing I guess.

I like Canson Bristol Smooth - 100lbs. It sounds like what you are after Helm. It's heavy and smooth like hot press watercolour paper. Maybe you could get your hands on some of that one?

Stonehenge :)

Its very good for pencils you can get lots and lots of layers and its quite smooth. It comes in various colours and is sold as single sheets like your watercolour papers... but its quite affordable ... its really is a good paper for pencils if you like it smooth :)

Thanks for all your thoughts on paper guys, I"m excited to find some. Now I know what words to throw around when I go to an art shop. I need to buy some proper pens too, have the ink for washes and the graphite but not proper pens....just cheap ones (which i love!)

V-Mak, yep when I go to the art store, I'll make sure it's yours :D A good excuse to go over your joint.
