I brought home some Huon pine burls from Tasmania last year with a vague intention of doing "something" with them. So I have joined a woodcarving and sculpture class at my local art society, and armed with some practice timber called gelutong I have started my very first ever woodcarving sculpture!
So excited was I by this venture I just had to share.
This is the result after my first three hours.
(Those of you who caught my floral paintings in acrylics may recognise the inspiration.)
I now have to wait a whole week before doing any more as I have no tools of my own! My fingers are itching!

very good...what are the qualities of the wood .....is it soft.....hard....fine grained...soft?
Way to go !!! It's always a great feeling when trying a totally different way of creating. I decided to do a sculpting course this year but sadly there weren't any classes near by this term.

Thanks Michelle, Inkgal and Judy. Gelutong is a fine grained blond coloured timber that comes from Indonesia. It is lovely and soft to carve (like butter) and is traditionally used for making moulds and I imagine for carving images for block printing. It has no knots or variations in colour so probably a bit boring for serious carvers, but great for me to start on.
I totally know what you mean about trying something new Judy. Every now and then I just have to, and I have been thinking about sculpture for a while now. I was a bit worried about adjusting from 2 dimensions to 3 but I am having real fun with it. I just have to keep remembering to turn it around and look at from all angles.

After having to wait a whole week I was excited to get back to the carving group.
Here is the next stage after three more hours of carving. So I have added some relief work on the front.

Thankyou all.
Sorry Vesna, but unless I manage to get myself some tools of my own, the next instalment won't be for two weeks as there is no group meeting next week.
I don't know how I will last for two weeks!
Coming along nicely. What size is this ? Maybe you could put a soft drink can or some other familiar object in the picture to show comparison ? Thanks.

I was so happy to get back into it this week. I have started to work my way around the sides and onto the back. It's a big adjustment to work three dimensionally but fabulously challenging. I worked on it for another three hours but it doesn't look it.
I have put a box of matches (big ones) in the photo to give an idea of size.

Thanks V-Mak and Sweetmango. I am having a lot of fun with it! Can't wait till the next meeting. I am also starting to see where I'm going with it and working from all angles.
Lookin good there INgridr- did you plan it out or did your muse cut in?

That's a good question Jade. I sort of had a plan to start with, just the basic shape, but it's sort of evolving as I go along.

Another three hours work. The grooves are deeper and the shapes are throwing deeper shadows. I don't know if you can see much difference.??..

Thanks Vesna and Sweetmango for your support.
Cheers,

ooh are you going to stain it? How big is it?
ingridr

It's 25cm tall, 16cm wide, and 4cm thick. I'm not sure about staining it, maybe the bulk of it a mahogany colour with the curvy relief bits left light, or visa versa. What do you think?
ooooh I think that would suit it verrrrry nicely!
