Just look at something like the fog warning. noone touches him in the marine setting. i've seen nothing that defines the essence of character so well as the aforementioned painting. cloud shadows is great also.
anyone with any thoughts on homer or on anyone else who can come close?

Could you please post links to "Fog Warnings" and similar paintings. Much easier for you to do that than for all of us having to do Google searches. I do not think Winslow Homer is so well known outside the US

they seem rather crude as such. hunter and hound in particular is much sharper than it is represented here.
