I haven't posted any pictures here before so i have no idea if this will work..

This is a paper-mache dinosaur mask I made. You can wear it on your head, to costume parties and things.. or, most of the time it just sits on top of my tv. I figured 'other art forms' was probably the right category to post this...

Apart from paper and wallpaper glue there are some polystyrene balls to get the shape for the eyes, and its covered in acrylic paint, plus a cracking medium to get a nice texture for the teeth.

I also made an elephant mask before this where you could drink through the trunk with a long straw, but I couldn't clean inside the straw and so i had to take it out.

Anyway let me know what you think.

It's really good Chris!

So, um - why are you making lots of masks?
what's your story?

Not lots really, just two.. I guess there is no real reason, I just thought of it and it struck me as something I wanted to do... The elephant was first - but its easy to make something look like an elephant it just has to have tusks, big ears and a long nose - you can't go wrong. The dinosaur I wanted more of a challenge to make something a bit more subtly shaped. One time I scared a visiting baby with it by accident...

That would make a great part of a costume. Good shape, quite bizarre to see just sitting there. It would be light weight too, which is practical. I couldnt see the elephant.

Yes, that is true. We just finished up with our annual carneval (Mardi Gras) and it would have been a great mask to use. Very good work.

Hey Chris your masks are awesome. I'm just a mom (not an artist) and i've been making dinosaur and reptilian costumes for my daughter since she was 4 (now she's 10). I am very creative and not afraid to try new things so the body, feet, wings, claws, tails, you name it...i can do. Have never been able to get a mask right. YOURS is perfect. Could I get a bigger photo emailed to me directly and maybe some pointers?
Like:
what to use as base for shaping papier maiche?
did you form teeth as part of base piece or added later?
you mentioned wallpaper glue...this is what you used instead of the traditional flour and water mixture for the paper maiche?

thanks a lot for any advice.

Lynn
