Like it a lot Stephen!

Can I be very nosy and ask you some questions about your experience of being an artist? I'm completely fascinated by aboriginal art. I'm assuming you are aboriginal - yes?

How do you approach a painting - and is there always a story behind them? Do you feel a responsibility to produce traditional art - or do you just do what moves you and it comes out like this?

I have such a love of some of the stunning works that you see about, and always wonder where they spring from. It's so completely different from the European sensibility.

Yes I’m a Contemporary Artist, my Mother in Aboriginal my Dads a pommy. :tongue_smilie:

How do you approach a painting - and is there always a story behind them?
Sometime the way I approach a painting is sometimes it just comes out. I still there in front of a blank canvas and just imagine it then go for it. Sometime I dream them like the one I posted here. I’m also doing another one which I have had many dreams about for some reason. Other times I go around the country taking photos of different things and paint from that.

For many years I wanted to mix Indigenous culture with Western Art so I set out to do this after a few years I decided to do some research to find out if other people where doing it and I found Lin Onus. What he has done in his own works it what I was trying to do to my own so I set out to find more about him which lead me to Fireworks Gallery. Unfortunately I missed Meeting with Lin because he passed away but I meet with Michael Eather and may more of Lins close friends and talked about his art work.

Back to the question: No not all of my paintings have a story, mainly because I’m not a traditional Indigenous artist. My paintings are an interpretation of what I am aloud to paint within my own culture and from what the elders of my region said I can paint, for example I will not paint Northern art if I do not have permission to because is disrespectful to that community and to the elders. Well that’s how I feel about it anyway.

Do you feel a responsibility to produce traditional art?
As I said before I’m not traditional, I have been around traditional elders before and I have been to remote communities where I have been invited to go and stay, which is fantastic.

Personally I don’t think, in a way, there is traditional art around anymore. I’ll explain before the 1960s Aboriginal art was mainly done in caves and in the desert regions in sand it wasn’t until the Europeans came and introduced acrylic/oils paints that the Aboriginal art movement boomed. Also the most traditional stuff is not painted at all but passed on and if painted the real meaning is not told only a part off it.

Do you just do what moves you and it comes out like this?

When I started painting it just came out of me. After a while I when to an indigenous art class to find out more and went from there. After many years painting havening exhibitions I went to Uni.
When I paint I sometime do research if I want something perfect (like a gecko painting I did) do some drawings, if I feel adventures if do it with photoshop to see what it looks like (I do this rarely) other then that I normally just do it.

I hope that helps, sorry about the grammar I just type what I’m thinking and normally it comes out right…….

Visit my website to view some of my other stuff and any other questions please let me know.
