Well not much about Chagall. However I know Duchamp was (form my opinion) basically the founder of Post Modernism is he did what no artist before him had done. He did just challenge the traditional and acceptable painting techniques as other Artists did i.g. Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.....Duchamp went that step further in being innovative and creative, seeing art more than just fine sculpture, painting, and drawing, he took objects from everyday life and emphasised there beauty, assembled them together and called it (the) "ready-made" art.
Marcel Duchamp paved the way of new thinking in the Art world. Questioned. Challenged. And rejected tradition.
From what my Book "The World Greatest Art" says about Chagall, he was born into a Jewish family in Russia. worked as a sign writer. Leaved through the world wars. Paintings combine fantasy, folklore, bibical themes, surreal quality. Influences were Gaugain and The Fauves.
Hope this helps. Good luck on your assignment.
Cheers Chrissy

Petra
Chagall is a lyrical and poetic painter even mystical
To me, his paintings depicting figures in flight and disconnected heads sugggests a condition such as being "insanely in love" or of meditative ecstacy when the logical mind leaves the body allowing it to dance or fly in joy :w00t:
ps I think you may have meant "I am in deep water, out of my depth can you help (save) me"

Petra
I think the important link between these two artists is that before Marcel Duchamp went on to do the "ready mades" which were the begining of the Dada art movement, he did a painting in 1912 called "Nude Descending a Starcase" which was highly influential to the Futurists, one of whom was the Russian Marc Chagall. So your key google search words are
"Nude descending a staircase" and "Futurism"
