WILD MAGNOLIA
30cm x 20cm
Watercolour
ARCHES
300gsm Cold Pressed Fin
This Magnolia was a little bit of an accident.
Magnolia's have to be my favourite flower... and here in my part of the world they have just finished flowering.
I wanted to achieve a bright background...think it's a little too bright... http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif then to add some dark I added some Sepia in the middle.
What are your thoughts...
I am always at a loss when it comes to backgrounds...
Anyway considering this medium is still a mystery to me... I'm kind of happy this one turned out... even though it's on the WILD SIDE!http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/images/smilies/smileywave.gif

The background does seem a little bright. Maybe if there was another colour in the painting it would be ok. But then I am no expert. When I paint it is all trial and error. It is not unusual for me to start out with an image in my mind and end up with something completely different.

Jayde... thanks for having a look at this one as well...you agree with me...about it being "bright" yes!
I didn't have a reference photo for this... just drew the Magnolia from memory... and followed my instincts...
Sometimes we get bogged down in the reference photo and don't really let our creativity come through...
I have done a lot of Graphite Drawings concentrating on photo-realism... so when I get an opportunity to just play... "trail & error" like... it just facinates me!
More of us should just let loose...

Wild side is good , its okay to let the painting take over at times , if you not sure at times i find it helpful to look at the colour wheel and instead of harmonies colour at a opposite , say in this instance a bit more violet going into the blues
but hey it looks great a wonderful flower

I just love your "little bit of an accident" Please don't fiddle about with it ...it is perfect as it is!
I love the way the background and the magnolia merge and almost become one. The colour is fantastic! it is a great composition and it is lovely in its looseness.
Matt it and frame it :thumbup1::thumbup1:

Petra Sohns...thanks for the advice about the colour wheel...as I haven't been working on watercolour for long...my third term now... it was a little experimental.
Mrs Willow...Hi there Sandy... my florals tend to inherit a personality all their own as they are being created... this one just happened to turn out this way... was tired of being precious with the paint...so I went for it!
Haven't yet framed or matted it yet... but I will...thanks!
phil eckert...thanks Phil... for stopping by to make a comment... appreciate it!
